Granholm's message powerful in first debate

Governor Jennifer Granholm delivered a clear message in her first debate. Her past work and future plans for the state of Michigan put ordinary people and common sense first.

Overall Leadership

Granholm is the clear winner. She works for the common interests of ordinary people. She has great understanding of our laws and constitution. She outlined the reasons she has made difficult decisions. DeVos could only say everything she did "disappointed" him, and he not once directly answered a question. Good leaders are able to be direct. He skirted around every single question relating to the economy and his business dealings.

Jobs and the economy

Granholm is working to help Michigan citizens through our transformation from a predominantly automobile-related economy to a diverse economy, including the effort to make Michigan a leader in alternative energy.

Dick DeVos said he is "disappointed" in the governor's performance. He stated we needed a new leader, but he offered no specifics and no plan.

Stem Cell Research

Governor Granholm is for using stem cell research to offer hope to thousands suffering from disease and paralysis. DeVos says we should vote for him since he has been "consistent" in his opposition of this possibly life-saving research.

Abortion

Granholm supports a woman's right to make this decision. DeVos' extremist position is a woman should not be able to choose an abortion even if she is raped or a victim of incest.

Other issues

DeVos refuses to release his tax records. What is he hiding? And the issue about investing in a multi-million dollar nursing home company that hurt seniors. He couldn't have cared less.

Conclusion

Jennifer Granholm became governor of a state in horrible financial trouble, paid the debt off, and is working to offer educational and economic solutions to problems Dick DeVos is responsible for causing.

Jennifer Granholm wins on substance and sincerity. Sorry to "disappoint" you, Dick.

I Have to agree witn you on how well, The Message came through on Governor Grnholm`s debate this night. while Devos had the Deer in a head light look and with empty statements, and with out dirction for Michigan`s Future, other then to blame all the woe`s of Michigan on The Governor, when he forgets that the senate is controled by the Republican party and have voted down several needed Bills, as well that he himselfs has taken away from the economy, by sending it To China, and Candy coating it that it was needed to spring board jobs, more like money in his pocket and not the people`s.

Governor Granholm came across as calm and truthful while Dick Devos seemed disingenuous. DeVos's team has previously admitted that Michigan was never in the running for the Honda plant. Do we really think that every auto plant in the world will choose to set up in Michigan?

Governor Granholm has a long term vision for Michigan; diversification, starting with an agressive education agenda. The governor's focus on alternative energy will create high paying jobs. Greenville, Michigan is an example of taking a community devastated by job loss and convincing a Michigan company to build plants producing solar energy products. By the way this company was ready to take the jobs to South Carolina!

Dick DeVos says he wants lobbying reform. While he was presidaent of Amway he agressively lobied for unfair trade policies. This included Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) smoothing the way for China's membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO). These unfair trade policies have hurt Michigan workers.

DeVos used the Patrick Selepak and Ricky Holland tragedy's to place blame on Governor Granholm. The reality is employees responsible for the early release of Selepak were disciplined and the Governor ordered a reorganization of the Department of Corrections. Governor Granholm used the Ricky Holland attack to comment on her fight to protect Michigan families, her reorganization of the state's Child Protective Services, foster home monthly background checks, and her experience as a former prosecuter.

In every case where DeVos sought to disparage the Governor she fought back with poise, facts, and a presence. Her ability to lead as she fights for Michigan jobs and Families came across loud and clear tonight. Michigan will definitely be the winner when Governor Granholm is elected for her second term.
